Basic Japanese Phrases You Should Know !

The best way to learn any language is by using it, so of course the best way to use a language is when you want to introduce yourself, get a conversation going or ask for something. Here I go through some common phrases you can use when meeting a person and when you want to travel somewhere around Japan.

初めまして, 私の名前は_(name)さん、..(Country).からきました。Nice to meet you, my name(名前) is ________, I am from ________.

  • Japanese: 初めまして　English: Hajimemashite (nice to meet you)
  • Japanese：私の名前は　English: Watashi no name wa.. (my name is..)
  • Japanese: からきました English: Karakimashita (i am from.)

すみません。 英語を話せますか. Excuse me, do you speak English?

  • Japanese: すみません English: Sumimasen. Excuse me
  • Japanese: 英語を話せますかJ English: Hanasemasuka? Do You speak?

すみません。駅はどこですか. Excuse me, where is the station(駅)? what time is it now?

  • Japanese：すみません English: Sumimasen excuse me
  • Japanse: 駅はどこですか English: Eki wa doko desuka? Where is the Station?

今は何時ですか. What time (何時) is it now?

  • Japanese：今は　English: Ima, Now
  • Japanese: 何時ですか English: Nanji DesuKa? What is the time?

英語のメニューがありますか?”. Do you have an English Menu?

  • Japanese: 英語のメニュー English: Eigo no menu, English Menu
  • Japanese: ありますか?” English: Arimasuka? Is it available here?/Do you have it?

Ordering food items: Basic Japanese for quantity

– 1: hitotsu
– 2: futatsu
– 3: mitsu
– 4: yotsu
– 5: itsutu
– 6: mutsu
– For everyone: ninsu

私が乗る飛行機は夜の８時発です。 Watashi ga noru(乗る embark) hikōki (飛行機 airport) wa yoru (夜 evening) no hachi ji hatsu(発 departure) desu. 

My flight is at 8pm!?

私は仕事のために朝早く起きなければならない。Watashi wa shigoto (仕事 work) no tame ni (because of) asa hayaku (早くearly) okinakereba(起きなければ To get up) naranai(cannot)

I have to get up early tomorrow in the morning for work

Japanese conversation

  • John:
  • Ohayō gozaimasu. Good morning. おはようございます。
  • Eigo o hanasemasu ka?  Do you speak English? えいごをはなせますか。
  • Yuki:
  • Sumimasen. I’m sorry. すみません。
  • Eigo wa hanasemasen. I do not speak English. えいごははなせません
  • Watashi wa nihongo ga sukoshi shika hanasemasen. Unfortunately, I speak only a little Japanese. わたしはにほんごがすこししかはなせません。
  • John:
  • Dai jōbu desu. That’s all right. だいじょうぶです。
  • Wakarimasu. I understand you. わかります
